Corey Lanerie is a well-known horse jockey who has won many races in Thoroughbred racing. In addition, he has also been named the top rider at Ellis Park, Lone Star Park, Sam Houston Race Park, Churchill Downs, and Retama Park. The sportsman was born Corey James Lanerie on November 13, 1974. He is a third-generation horseman from Lafayette, Louisiana. Corey Lanerie’s grandfather trained Thoroughbreds, and his father, Gerald Lanerie, was a jockey before switching to become a trainer.

Similarly, Corey’s mother, Debbie Lanerie, might have also been interested in horse racing. The young guy started working with horses when he was nine years old and began racing in 1991. As mentioned earlier, the jockey started riding professionally in 1991, and he won his first race with the High Hopes Banquet at Evangeline Downs on April 19 of the same year.

The following year, Lanerie won his first stakes race, the Black Gold Skates at the Fair Grounds in New Orleans, Louisiana. His graded stakes win came a few years later at the Razorback Handicap at Oaklawn Park in 1999. The Louisiana native received the George Woolf Memorial Jockey Award in 2014, which was decided by the votes of his peers. He also has a reputation of being well-liked and respected among his fellow competitors.

Corey is named one of the leading riders in Churchill Downs with ten victories. Despite his massive success at the racing complex, he has only ridden in the Kentucky Derby three times. Corey Lanerie’s Wife Died At 42

The horse rider was previously married to a lovely lady. Corey Lanerie’s wife, Shantel Lanerie, was the daughter of a trainer, and the two met each other during Corey’s early career stage. The couple started dating in high school and had been together since then. The duo married on April 11, 1997, and enjoyed marital bliss for many years.

Corey Lanerie’s spouse worked as a tab writer with the clocker at Lone Star Park and was a photographer’s assistant at Churchill Downs. In January 2018, she was diagnosed with Stage 1 breast cancer after having discovered two tumors. A third tumor was also discovered after additional testing, and doctors immediately started treating Shantel.

Following her cancer diagnosis, Corey’s partner began the breast cancer awareness initiatives in Kentucky, including “Horses and Hope” day at Keeneland Racing. She also led a parade of 144 breast cancer survivors in 2018.

Sadly, Shantel was taken to the emergency room on June 21, 2018, after lapsing into a coma. She passed away the next day, on June 22. Fifteen days after her tragic death, Corey returned to compete in the sixth race at Arlington Park. In one of his interviews, he said racing distracts him from his grief.

I don’t know if I’m strange or just strong, but I know my wife’s in a better place. She would want me to be happy. She’d be like, ‘You need to go out and make money’

Corey Lanerie’s late wife gave birth to their daughter, Brittlyn Lanerie, in 2008. Corey now lives with his child in Louisville, Kentucky. Brittlyn was just ten when her mother died. And it must have been very hard for her to deal with the heartbreaking news.

Corey Lanerie’s daughter loves to dance and has also competed. She also sang the national anthem at Keeneland in honor of her late mom in 2019.
