Corey Lanerie’s Wife Died At 42
The horse rider was previously married to a lovely lady. Corey Lanerie’s wife, Shantel Lanerie, was the daughter of a trainer, and the two met each other during Corey’s early career stage. The couple started dating in high school and had been together since then. The duo married on April 11, 1997, and enjoyed marital bliss for many years.
Corey Lanerie’s spouse worked as a tab writer with the clocker at Lone Star Park and was a photographer’s assistant at Churchill Downs. In January 2018, she was diagnosed with Stage 1 breast cancer after having discovered two tumors. A third tumor was also discovered after additional testing, and doctors immediately started treating Shantel.
Following her cancer diagnosis, Corey’s partner began the breast cancer awareness initiatives in Kentucky, including “Horses and Hope” day at Keeneland Racing. She also led a parade of 144 breast cancer survivors in 2018.
Sadly, Shantel was taken to the emergency room on June 21, 2018, after lapsing into a coma. She passed away the next day, on June 22. Fifteen days after her tragic death, Corey returned to compete in the sixth race at Arlington Park. In one of his interviews, he said racing distracts him from his grief.
I don’t know if I’m strange or just strong, but I know my wife’s in a better place. She would want me to be happy. She’d be like, ‘You need to go out and make money’
The jockey’s return was reported by many publications.
Proud Father Of One
Corey Lanerie’s late wife gave birth to their daughter, Brittlyn Lanerie, in 2008. Corey now lives with his child in Louisville, Kentucky. Brittlyn was just ten when her mother died. And it must have been very hard for her to deal with the heartbreaking news.
Corey Lanerie’s daughter loves to dance and has also competed. She also sang the national anthem at Keeneland in honor of her late mom in 2019.
Corey’s little girl, Brittlyn, is very supportive of his career and attends many races too.
The American jockey has seen both wins and losses in his career. Yet, his determination and passion for horse racing remain the same. Hopefully, we will continue to see him getting more victories in the day ahead.
