The coach was born Dean Clement Evason on August 22, 1964, in Flin Flon, Manitoba, Canada, to his parents, Al Evason and Sheila Evason. Dean Evason’s father was also a hockey player who competed from 1959 to 1960 for the Wembley Lions of the British National League. So, Dean grew up watching and playing the game with him.
Dean Evason’s brother, Danial Allan ‘Heavy’ Evason, had been an active volunteer for Special Olympics since he was a teenager. He coached, managed, scouted, and played professional hockey for twenty years. On March 6, 2004, Danial collapsed on the ice after a heart attack while playing hockey. The hockey community was shocked and saddened by his sudden demise.
Unfortunately, Evason’s dad also passed away on May 11, 2019, just before he was inducted into the Manitoba Hockey Hall of Fame as a part of the 1965-66 Flin Flon Warriors squad in October.
