Furthermore, Ted’s mom, Joanne Koumantzelis Leonsis, was a secretary who passed away before his father.

The former AOL executive went to Brooklyn Technical High School. After moving to Lowell, Massachusetts, he enrolled at Lowell High School and graduated in 1973. The Georgetown alumnus began working as a corporate communication manager at Wang Laboratories after graduation. He also worked in Harris Corp. as a marketing executive. In 1982, a year after the investor left the latter company, he moved to Florida in order to begin his first business venture, i.e., LIST, a technology magazine focused on the then-new personal computing industry. He and his partner, Vincent Pica, raised $1 million in seed capital.

Then, in 1987, the New York-born businessman started Redgate Communications Corporation, a marketing communications company. In 1994, America Online (AOL) acquired the firm, and he worked as a senior executive for 13 years. Under his leadership, AOL’s revenue ascended from $100 million to $1.5 billion. Moreover, Leonsis is the majority owner, chairman, founder, and CEO of Monumental Sports & Entertainment. The company owns the NHL’s Washington Capitals, NBA’s Washington Wizards, WNBA’s Washington Mystics, NBA G League’s Capital City Go-Go, and formerly the AFL’s Baltimore Brigade and Washington Valor.

In January 2013, Monumental Network was launched by Monumental Sports & Entertainment. Likewise, Leonsis is the founder, chairman, and largest shareholder of SnagFilms. His first production project was the documentary Nanking. He has also founded several other companies, including Revolution Money, Revolution Growth, etc. Furthermore, as per Ted’s LinkedIn, he also serves on the advisory board of Georgetown University Entrepreneurship Initiative.
